Freehostia are FRAUDS! They are currently being investigated by ICANN. Here is a summary of my experience:
I have filed a complaint against freehostia and liquitnetlimited with ICANN and econsumer.gov for fraudulent business practices. After purchasing my domain from freehostia.com, I needed to edit some WHOIS information I typed incorrectly. Freehostia told me I wasn't allowed to edit my WHOIS record and suspended my website. I contacted a rep from ICANN who told me per ICANN's rules, I had the right to update the WHOIS record as appropriate, and gave me information to forward along to the freehostia representative which explained this in writing. Still the freehostia rep refused to assist me. I figured out on my own how to update my WHOIS information and did so. I confirmed the record and told a different representative at freehostia to send me the verification link so I could complete the second part of the verification process. The rep told me to provide proof of ownership over the website, which is odd considering I purchased it from them. Nevertheless I copied/pasted my purchase invoice to the rep and was sent the link which enabled me to complete the entire verification process. Finally I had my website back!! Or so I thought. 2 hours later, freehostia suspended my domain claiming I could not prove I was the owner of the WHOIS record. I guess they don't understand that the owner of the WHOIS record is the person who purchased the domain. He or she is free to update that information as appropriate. They've gone a step further to completely lock me out of my cpanel all together for no reason. The level of un-professionalism and sheer incompetence is mind blowing. The reps have been taunting me telling me ICANN is never going to side with me which makes zero sense considering I had already spoken with a rep from ICANN who confirmed I was in the right. I've been forced to file a complaint with ICANN to get access to my site back. Refusing to give someone access to something they PAID FOR is FRAUD pure and simple. ICANN prohibits hosting providers from interfering with the websites of which they host for illegitimate or haphazard reasons. I tried contacting management at freehostia to complain about the deplorable customer service I was receiving and Dan Silvester (I'm assuming a manager over there) replied to my email in a shockingly unprofessional manner which included making accusations I was trying to defraud or somehow steal the website (something he and I both have proof I purchased). I am a certified ethical hacker. Company's hire me to hack their websites legally to find security vulnerabilities. I know a thing or two about how WHOIS and how the internet operates. The more I interact with the reps at freehostia, the more I am confident in my assessment that the people there are completely incompetent and utterly ignorant about all things related to their job profession.

Very poor experience. VERY SLOW, bad customer service, no independence (for example password-protecting pages yourself - you can only use their tool).
I would definitely not recommend it.

Very bad! The free package is totally useless 500k file size limit, cannot send mail via PHP, and cannot hotlink. Decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and upgrade my package, only to be blocked immediately, because I happen to use a different IP addresses to access paypal(!?) and they didn't like my domain name!!? Avoid like the plague!!

I have a paid hosting account with Freehostia since 2010 and I have had it with their serivce interruptions. In Feb. 2013 access to my website was unavailable because of their "upgrade" to a cloud based architecture, which was done without any warning. Now, in Mar. 2014 they have surprised their customers without another "upgrade" and my website is inaccessible once again. When I experience problems in 2013 I hosted some of my website content on 000webhost and I have been very happy with 000webhost despite the slightly annoying pop-up advertisements. Freehostia is abominable when it come to communication with their customers. Announcements (after the fact) have no dates and it's impossible to guess the timeframes for their interventions.

In my own experience freehostia have been poor to say the least. I had a problem with the initial upload of my site, (created with Serif webplus), and mailed freehostia for help. They told me they would reply within 24 hours (an automated mail). After two weeks I mailed them to see what was happening. Rec'd the same (automated) mail again. Over two months later still no reply. I have given up and taken my site and custom elsewhere. Suggest you go elsewhere.

I have had several sites hosted free for a couple of years now and I have found it really good for a free host. Some limitations as you might expect but not serious ones. I have had several occasions to contact their help desk and they have been wonderful. If my sites got any bigger I would be happy to transfer to their paid hosting based on my experience with their free service.
